Born in Leningrad in 1930, Lazar Berman has been hailed as one of the supreme keyboard technicians of our time.  A pupil of Alexander Goldenweiser at the Moscow Conservatory, he was influenced by Sviatoslav Richter and Vladimir Sofronitsky.  He has recorded extensively for Melodiya, Columbia and Deutsche Gramaphon.  His recording of the Liszt Transcendental Etudes is legendary.   Mr. Berman now lives with his family in Italy.

Lazar Berman, like his fellow Russian pianistic titans, Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter, Lazar Berman was already hailed as "Legendary" before he had played a single note in the United States.   Gilels had called Berman "the phenomenon of the music world" and Berman's Russian recordings were already much sought after and prized by aficionados.   The music critic for Milan's Corriere della Sera called him a "super-colossus."  He was compared to Franz Liszt in Hungary.

Berman has performed with virtually all of the great conductors of our time including Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Daniel Barenboim, Carlo Maria Giulini, Lorin Maazel and Claudio Abbado.
